HOLY LAND: CARITAS OF JERUSALEM, "GAZA IS WORN DOWN"

"Gaza is worn down". The cry for alarm comes today from the Caritas of Jerusalem, which opened a medical centre within the Strip to bring aids to the population. "The houses have no electricity or water – states Caritas – the main power plant has been damaged by the Israeli bombs, causing power outages so people cannot use the pumps to draw water from the wells. The consequences are borne most of all by the sick, the elderly, children and newborn babies". Caritas informs that "the main hospital in Gaza, Al Shifa, is operated by a generator but it won’t be able to go on for much longer. The situation is aggravated by the lack of oil and diesel for work and transport. There are no buses or taxis available". The operators of the medical centre of Gaza said "they are asking that first aid kits be distributed to the locals so that they can use then at home in an emergency". "If Israel launches a land offensive, Gaza will be subjected to a curfew and the sick and wounded people won’t be carried around. Doctors and ambulances won’t be able to drive around". Food is in short supply as well. "In Gaza – recalls Caritas – there are anaemic women and undernourished children. There’s no milk, cheese and meat and anything that must be kept in the fridge. Only people who have money can afford to buy food. The government has not paid the wages for five months".
