SWITZERLAND: IN A DOCUMENT FROM THE BISHOPS, "NO" TO THE LAW ON ASYLUM ” “” “

“No to the revision of the law on asylum and foreigners. A different glance”: this is the title of the document drafted by the Justice and Peace Commission of the Swiss Bishops Conference in cooperation with the Swiss Caritas and the Migratio Commission, containing the Bishops’ comments about asylum and foreigners. "Every political and social action must guarantee a decorous life to all human beings. Therefore we wish for an asylum policy based on actual facts and reflecting the real world where we live”, explained the Bishops today in a note, insisting on their opposition, that they had already expressed on several occasions, to the law passed by Parliament in December 2005 which will be submitted to public consultation on September 24th 2006. At the heart of the debate, reads the note, “there are the fundamental values of our society: human dignity and the ensuing rights”. “With these new restrictive measures – warn the Bishops – every man’s dignity is no longer respected. The requests for protection can be turned down based on strictly formal criteria that do not consider at all the reasons that may have driven someone out of his country”. Hence, the request that "our actions" may be guided by the "love of our neighbours and global justice”. The document of the Swiss Bishops is available, free of charge, at: commande@juspax.ch
