MOSCOW: INTER-RELIGIOUS SUMMIT; CARD. POUPARD, RELIGIONS "PLAY A UNIQUE ROLE IN THE CREATION OF FAIRER SOCIETIES" (2)

” “Card. Poupard, in his speech at the World Summit of the delegates of the great religions (Moscow, 3-5 July), expressed concern for "the direction taken by the political systems, mostly focussed on economic power to the detriment of justice and solidarity" and for "the crisis of the values that is widespread in entire segments of the world population". Poupard also lamented the "inhuman application of some breakthroughs of science and technology": "These too are challenges that demand urgent and fully human responses". Then, the cardinal lingered on the contribution given by religions "to the development and protection of the cultural heritage of mankind": "In a world of peaceful cohabitation and exchange of cultural assets, religions are like open houses that can teach and practice dialogue, the respect of people’s differences and dignity, the love of truth… History shows that the Church, through its moral and religious lessons, gives a proactive and extraordinary contribution to the growth of social cohesion".” “
