SPAIN: MGR.DORADO SOTO (MALAGA) ABOUT ORGAN DONATION, “A DELICATE FORM OF EVANGELICAL LOVE”

Donating one’s organs so that other people may survive is "a delicate and anonymous form of evangelical love towards the needy". This is what the bishop of Malaga, mgr. Antonio Dorado Soto, wrote in a letter to the congregation of the diocese, that has been disclosed today, one week before Organ Donors’ Day, due on June 7th. The bishop, who will chair the commission of the Spanish Bishops Conference for Education and Catechesis, states that "the Catholic Church respects the free decision of its children. Many are those who have decided to become donors, and it praises this gesture of deep fraternity towards unknown people who need an organ transplantation to survive". At the same time, "the Church encourages more people to do the same", goes on the bishop, as he recalled the high success rate (80%) of transplants due to the current medical and scientific advancements. For those who "live life as God’s gift and believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ", concludes the bishop, donating "a part of their bodies to let someone else keep on living is not against faith”, but it is actually consistent with "Christ’s lesson to give up one’s life”.
