” “"For the EU Commission, the fight against climate change is a priority": José Manuel Barroso, head of the EU Executive Committee, launched in Brussels today an awareness-raising campaign named "Climate change: you can control it". Huge posters, T-shirts, events in schools, conferences, brochures and a website (http://www.climatechange.eu.com) are the first media the EU wants to use for a campaign aimed at "slightly changing our daily habits so as to help considerably reduce greenhouse gas emissions". The plan is targeted to the citizens of the 25 member states, showing "many tips which are easy and straightforward for raising the citizens’ awareness of their responsibilities and possibilities in this area". The first message for instance is for families: "Households produce about 16% of the total greenhouse gas emissions in the EU, most of which is the result of energy production and consumption". The specific website offers about fifty tips to become more environment-friendly at home: one can for instance reduce the heating by 1°C, not let TVs or computers in standby mode (a 10% saving on consumption) or even printing paper on both sides (a 50% saving on consumption).
