BENEDICT XVI IN POLAND: THE PRIEST AS THE “WITNESS OF ETERNAL WISDOM”.

” “Selfishness, haste, relativism, pessimism, “an exaggerated attention to oneself”. These are some of the typical dangers of today’s dominant culture that the priests have to avoid, by responding to the “great noise” with the “silence” of prayer. Such as the “deep ” and “unforgettable” one of one million young people in Cologne. The Pope is convinced of that, when, as he spoke to the Polish priests, he recalled that “of priests, the devotees expect just one thing: that they are experts in promoting the meeting of man with God”. “Priests are not asked of being experts in economics, in building or in politics. One only expects them to be experts in spiritual life”, said Benedict XVI, according to whom “when a young priest moves his first steps, he must be able to refer to a tried and tested master who will help him not to get lost amidst the many proposals of the culture of the time”. “Before the temptations of relativism or permissiveness – warned the Pope – the priest does not have to be conversant with all the current, fleeting currents of thought; what the devotees expect of him is that he will be the witness of eternal wisdom, contained in the revealed word”.
