ECUMENISM: THE EUROPAN CHRISTIAN CHURCHES IN NORTHERN IRELAND IN THE NAME OF PEACE AND RECONCILIATION

” “The Central Committee of the Conference of European Churches (which brings together the Orthodox, Protestant, Anglican and Old Catholic churches) will meet for its yearly session, from May 25th to 31st, in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The Committee is composed of 40 members and is chaired by president Jean-Arnold de Clermont. “It’s not by chance – explains the secretary general of the ecumenical body, the Anglican Colin Williams – that the Central Committee is going to meet in Ireland this year. It is a part of Europe in which peace and reconciliation are not abstract concepts which can be easily discussed, but concepts that for decades have been really experienced by the community in difficult circumstances”. It is in the light of this matter that the members of the Committee are going to visit the ecumenical community of Corrymeela, which for decades has been engaged in bringing reconciliation amidst the population and will meet the leaders of the Irish churches. The points on the agenda include the process of rearrangement of the ecumenical movement; the relations with the World Church Council, the Commission of the Churches for Migrants in Europe and the Council of the European Bishops Conferences. They will also speak of the preparation of the third European Ecumenical Assembly, which, promoted by all Christian Churches of Europe, will take place in Sibiu in September 2007.
