THE POPE AT REGINA CAELI: APPEAL TO GOVERNMENTS FOR A "QUICK AND PROACTIVE” ACTION AGAINST HUNGER

An appeal to governments and public opinion to promote a "quick and proactive action to guarantee everyone, especially children, freedom from hunger”. It was addressed yesterday morning by Pope Benedict XVI before saying the Regina Caeli, as he recalled the "Walk the World" plan, launched by the UN Food Program against Hunger. The event took place yesterday in Rome and in some cities of about 100 countries. "I really hope – said the Pope – that, with everyone’s help, we can fight the plague of hunger which still affects men, seriously endangering the lives of millions of people. I am thinking first of all of the urgent, dramatic situation of Darfur, in Sudan, where they still have huge problems even in fulfilling the primary needs of the population". Then, the Pope recalled the celebration of the World Day of Social Communication (“Mass media: a communication, communion an cooperation network”) and asked the operators to help, through their work, to "strengthen the bonds of peace and solidarity among peoples”.
