EUROPE: RESPECT OF RELIGIONS AND THE ROLE OF THE FAMILY WITHIN SOCIETY: TWO INITIATIVES OF THE CoE

” “"Freedom of expression and the respect of religious creeds": the Parliamentary Meeting of the Council of Europe will hold, all day tomorrow at the Palais du Luxembourg in Paris, an audition which, explain the promoters, "will bring together philosophers, historians, theologians, journalists, artists and writers", leaders of "different religions, alongside victims of offences against religion". The workshop refers back to the issue of the cartoons of Muhammad that had been recently published on the continental press. Participants include essayist Caroline Fourest, the head rabbi of Paris David Messas, the rector of the mosque of Bordeaux Tareq Oubrou. In this period, a report about this subject is being developed within the CoE, under the coordination of Finnish MP Sinikka Hurskainen. In addition, the CoE has organised the meeting on the family, which started yesterday in Lisbon and will close today. The goal of the event, which brings together the ministers concerned of the 46 member states, is to "give a boost to family policies", "by reasserting the concept of the family as the core of society". In her opening speech, the deputy secretary general Maud de Boer Buquicchio called for, in particular, "the abolition of physical punishment all over Europe for the good of children".” “
