EUROPE: REHN (EU COMMISSION), FOR THE ACCESSION OF ROMANIA AND BULGARIA TO THE EU, "MANY REFORMS STILL NEED TO BE CARRIED THROUGH" (2)

” “The head of the Rumanian delegation at the EU Parliament, Marian Jean Marinescu, comments the Report of the EU Commission on the future accession of Bucharest and Sofia to the EU: "I am sure Romania and Bulgaria will reach the EU early next year. We have gone a long way, the countries are getting modern and we expect our efforts to be rightly acknowledged". And then: "We know we have still problems before us, but the governments are determined to fulfil the requirements set forth by the EU for the accession. Our citizens too expect this to happen". During the debate, which took place at parliament today, some political groups expressed their appreciation of the reforms carried through by the two nominees, wishing the date of January 1st 2007 will be met. However, adverse positions did not go missing; someone said that "these countries are still far from fulfilling the accession requirements" and that "the climate about accession has changed". Europe is at a deadlock and "we must be warier as we move towards extending the EU boundaries".” “
