EUROPE: KHOL (AUSTRIAN PARLIAMENT), "MORE AND MORE CONVINCED THAT THE EU NEEDS A CONSTITUTION"

” “"Over these two days of debates, none of the members of the EU parliament said the Constitution is pointless or that we can do without it. Actually, we leave this hall in the belief that the enforcement of the Treaty would strengthen the EU process": Andreas Khol, president of the Austrian Parliament, organised, in conjunction with the president of the EU Assembly, Josep Borrell, the Parliamentary Forum on the "Future of Europe", which is ending in Brussels today. "These days have been crammed with exchanges of opinions, we asked ourselves what ways we can be possibly go to make the EU break the deadlock in which it is today, after France and Holland voted against the Constitution". Just today, the Estonian Parliament passed the fundamental Charter: in this way, the signatories of the text become 15, "and soon – added Borrell – Finland should join too. In Europe, we are trying to put in place a supranational democracy, and it’s not easy. No one has a magic wand… We must appreciate the citizens’ feelings and expectations, move on along the way of reforms, which are essential to give stability to the European Union". The EU Parliament will bring together, for two days, 250 politicians from the 25 member states and from the future member states. The President of the EU Commission, José Manuel Barroso, and the President of the EU Council, Wolfgang Schüssel, took the floor today. The conclusions of the Forum will be reviewed, along with those from similar debates, by the summit of the EU heads of state and government on June 15th and 16th.” “
