THE VATICAN: THE POPE MEETS THE CARDINAL COLLEGE; DISTINGUISHED BISHOPS, LEFEBVRE AND ISLAM ARE SOME OF THE SUBJECTS

” “This morning, at the Vatican’s Auditorium of the Synod, Pope Benedict XVI met the members of the Cardinal College, summoned for "a moment of reflection and prayer", before tomorrow’s Ordinary Public Consistory, in which the Pope would appoint fifteen new Cardinals. After the speech by Cardinal Angelo Sodano, dean of the Cardinal College, the Holy Father started speaking and thanked the cardinals for taking part in the meeting. The meeting – it is written in a statement issued by the Press Office of the Vatican this morning – "offers us the opportunity to spend some time together, praying and reflecting, following the spirit of unity and communion which must characterize any ecclesial meetings, especially the meetings meant for those whom the Lord entrusted with positions of responsibility in His Church". Moreover, the Holy Father expressed the desire that the meeting was dedicated "above all, to some subjects in close relation with the current times". The first subject was the condition of the distinguished bishops and all the questions (more and more delicate) connected with it. Then, there were the question roused by Msgr. Lefebvre and the liturgical reform decided by the Second Vatican Council. Finally, there were the questions linked with the dialogue between the Church and Islam".” “
