ETA TRUCE: SPANISH BISHOPS (MARTÍNEZ CAMINO, SPOKESMAN), "WE REJOICE", BUT "ETA MUST ANNOUNCE ITS DISBANDMENT"

"But it doesn’t sound like much: Eta should announce its disbandment and disappearance, this is what the population expects". These are the words of father Martínez Camino, spokesman and secretary general of the Spanish bishops, after learning of the announcement made by the terrorist gang to start a "permanent truce" from March 24th. "It would appear that Eta cannot negotiate at all the respect of the fundamental rights of people or the normal operation of the democratic institutions that have the power and the responsibility for protecting solidarity and the common good of Spain", he added. Martínez Camino recalled that the position of the Church lies in the known bishops’ statements and in the Pastoral Instruction, "On the moral assessment of terrorism in Spain, its causes and its consequences". Closeness to the victims of terrorism was another aspect taken into account by the spokesman: "I would like to express once again the closeness and the solidarity of the Church with the people who suffer, with the people who have suffered the consequences of the terrorist acts of Eta, its murders, ransoms, abuse and threats of all sorts".” “
