ENGLAND: BISHOPS’ CAMPAIGN AGAINST EUTHANASIA STARTING THIS WEEK, THOUSANDS OF LEAFLETS AND DVDs IN THE PARISHES

” ” This week, the Catholic Church of England and Wales launches an important political campaign against the attempt by the British Parliament to legalise assisted suicide. Half a million leaflets and DVDs against euthanasia will be sent to every parish church in England and Wales. The law which the British Catholics are fighting against would allow doctors to prescribe lethal doses of drugs to terminally-ill patients and will be discussed by the House of Lords in May. It is the third time since 2003 that Lord Joffe, the promoter of this law, has tried to have it passed by the British Parliament. The religious leaders of the most important UK religions have declared they oppose to the law on assisted suicide, claiming the resources of the National Health Service should be invested in better palliative treatments. According to a survey conducted by the Daily Telegraph last year, 87% of British are in favour of the law. The Bishops of England and Wales have therefore asked Catholics to support in any possible way, including fund raising, “Care not Killing alliance”, a new pressure group gathering several pro-life associations.” “
