IRAQ: PARLIAMENT INSTALLATION, DELLY (PATRIARCH OF BAGHDAD), “ONE MORE STEP FORWARD FOR THE COUNTRY”

” “In an armoured Baghdad, with many shops and offices closed, traffic has been totally stopped since yesterday night; the newly-elected Iraqi Parliament, three months after the elections of last December 15th, is getting ready for its inaugural meeting today. “One more step forward is made today for the country – stated to SIR the Chaldean patriarch of Baghdad, Emmanuel III Delly – Parliament is a tool that God uses for the good, the peace and the security of our people. We hope men will be able to make it up and work for the future of Iraq”. The 275 MPs of the meeting include three Christians: “With the great respect that is due for any minority, they too are called to commit themselves and speak up”. “It is not up to me – he concluded – to say what priorities Parliament will have to deal with. We, as religious men, are in charge of praying along this walk that begins today, so that God’s will and not men’s be done”.
With today’s session, the Iraqi parliamentary meeting will have 60 days’ time to appoint a president and approve the appointment of the new government and prime minister.
