EUROPE: COMECE, “THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE CHURCHES TO A GOOD WORLD GOVERNANCE”

” “For a “good world governance”, “the role of the communities of faith is important and effective, not just for the contributions they can give” but also for raising the awareness “of the international governments and institutions”. This is written in the conclusions of the document of Comece (Commission of Episcopates of the European Community) “2005 Survey of world governance: some steps forward on a still long way”, which was presented today at a conference organised in Brussels by Comece and Epc (European Policy Centre). The meeting was attended by Michel Cadmessus, ex General Manager of the World Monetary Fund; Michel Hasenne, ex General Manager of the World Labour Organisation, and Antonio de Lecea, Director of Economic and Financial Affairs at the European Commission. The 2005 World Governance survey is the last one in a series of reports that are drawn up every year by the European bishops on the basis of the 28 recommendations issued in the 2001 document, “World governance report: our responsibility to turn globalisation into an opportunity for everyone”. “At the end of a year which has been affected by natural catastrophes, it is urgent”, highlight the bishops, “to reduce the impact of man’s activities on the natural environment, since it is the poorest who suffer most from it”. In addition, important are “education and IT”, which are useful “to improve everyone’s knowledge of and commitment to good governance issues”.
