EUROPE: ANTIRACIST T-SHIRTS TONIGHT ON ITALIAN AND GERMAN FOOTBALL PLAYERS

A t-shirt with two phrases on it: "The European Union against racism" and, on the back, Albert Einstein’s famous phrase: "Race? Human!". Tonight, on the occasion of the match between the Italian and the German national football teams, which will take place in Florence, Pier Virgilio Dastoli, director of the EU Commission Deputation to Italy, will give to the players of the two teams some T-shirts with the EU symbol and the antiracist slogans on them. This is an initiative of the delegation of the EU Executive Committee to Germany and Italy; the event will be attended by the ambassador of the German Federal Republic to Rome, Michael Gerdts. The aim is to "kick-start a joint campaign against all forms of racism, targeted in particular to the sports world, as part of a wider campaign against all forms of discrimination". The highlight of the campaign will be the next World Football Championship in Germany. Dastoli, quoting the EU Chart of Fundamental Rights, recalls that "all of mankind belongs to one and the same race, with no gender, colour, race or social background, genetic, language or religion discrimination – we must be proud of these common values and we must defend them, in our own interest and in the interest of our neighbours, starting from those places in which the spirit of solidarity and mutual respect should prevail, such as football stadiums". A message from Benedict XVI will be read before the match
