” ” As to the path to the building of the European Union, the request is that "the players of this big initiative" shoul take into account "all the aspects that concern the human being, its inalienable rights, especially religious freedom, which is the witness and the guarantor of the respect of any other freedom”: “In every initiative for unification – they write – the minorities have to be protected, with their cultural traditions and religious specificities. In Europe, Catholics and Orthodox, although open to the other religions and to the contribution they give to culture, must join forces to preserve the Christian roots, traditions and values, in order to guarantee the respect of history as well as to contribute to the culture of the future Europe, the quality of human relations at all levels”. They both extend their glance to the "places of the earth where Christians live and the problems they have to suffer, especially poverty, war and terrorism, as well as the many forms of exploitation of the poor, of immigrants, of women and children”.
