ITALY: DIOCESAN WEEKLIES, "CATHOLICS IN POLITICS. FREE OR MISSING?"

” “"Catholics in politics. Free or missing?" This is the subject to be discussed by the Italian Federation of Catholic Weeklies (Fisc, 162 weeklies for a total of one million copies), gathered in Rome for their 1st National extraordinary meeting, from 23rd to 25th November, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of their foundation (27 November 1966). "In the wake of their historical commitment on the territory – states father Giorgio Zucchelli, president of Fisc – our weeklies intend to engage in the reflection of the Church on the political commitment of the Catholics in Italy. In the light of the lesson of Benedict XVI and his reminder about the ‘non negotiable principles’, these papers intend to give their contribution to a political culture that, based on the freedom that comes from faith, may join the Catholics engaged on several fronts, to work together to build the common good and thus respond to the challenges thrown to life, the family and religious freedom". The meeting will be opened on November 23rd, by card. Camillo Ruini, president of the Italian Bishops Conference. On November 25th, Benedict XVI will grant an audience to Fisc. ” ” ” “
