"Europe needs a stable, democratic and prosperous Turkey that is at peace with its neighbours and positively moves towards modernisation and the adoption of the European values. This is why we have started accession negotiations, that however won’t be successfully unless Ankara positively continues its reforms and fulfils its obligations". The president of the EU Commission, José Manuel Barroso, adds his comment to the one provided by the Accession Commissioner Rehn, after the publication of the report about accession negotiations, speaking in particular of the case of Turkey. As to the other candidates, different situations are found: "Accession negotiations with Croatia got off to a good start states the Executive Committee from Brussels -. The country has taken important measures to adapt its legislation in a large number of areas, but it will have to work hard" to face "the reform of the judiciary, the fight against corruption and the economic reform". The other Western Balkan countries, instead, have "made progress along the roadmap that had been presented last year by the EU Commission. Each country moves at its own pace".
