EUROPE: SPIDLA (EU COMMISSION), "THE EU HAS TO RECKON WITH THE AGEING OF THE POPULATION"

” “"In the future, we will have to bear in mind the population in every policy. On the job market, in health care and pension schemes, the changes will be enormous, but the educational systems, city planning, housing facilities and infrastructures will have to reckon with the challenge of the ageing of the population". It is up to Vladimir Špidla, EU commissioner for employment, social affairs and equal opportunities, to present the "Forum on the future of the EU population" which brings together, today and tomorrow in Brussels, 400 delegates from the member states and experts from all over Europe, "called to discuss effective ways to cope with the changes resulting from the reduction in the labour force and the ageing of the population". According to Špidla, "today’s conference offers the EU countries and the experts an opportunity to exchange best practices and discuss long-term solutions". According to the EU Commission, "the rate of over-80 citizens in Europe is expected to be almost three times as high by 2050, when people aged 60 to 79 will account for one quarter of the total EU population".” “
