"The EU Commission treats the trade of human beings as a crime against the person, the object of which is the exploitation of the person": this is the inspiring principle that led to organise, in Helsinki tomorrow, a workshop "within the context of the EU Action Plan to fight the trade" of children, women and men, and their exploitation for work or sex. A general-purpose resolution of 2002 provides a legal definition of this subject, "however specifies a note from Brussels the European Commission is aware of the importance of converting" principled statements "into effective laws and actions". This needs "more effective prevention, appropriate protection and aids to the victims, the criminalisation of the trade", "a more proactive judicial cooperation" in this sphere. With a view to promoting an Action Plan, the Finnish chair of the EU organises the workshop of October 31st, which will be attended by politicians, EU executives and experts from several countries, to deal in particular with the problems of the exploitation of children and women within the EU.
