HOLY SEE: MGR. BALESTRERO, NO TO "DISTORSIONS" OF RELIGIONS FROM THE MEDIA AND TO "DISCRIMINATION" AGAINST CHRISTIANS

” “"The educational system and the media have special responsibility in avoiding stereotypes, distortions, attitudes of intolerance and the frequent contempt of religion and culture". This cry for alarm was given out by mgr. Ettore Balestrero, officer of the Secretariat of State, who represented the Holy See at the annual meeting for the implementation of commitments undertaken as part of the human rights by the 56 member states of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, that took place in Warsaw in these last few days. In the text, published today by the newsroom of the Holy See, the Vatican delegate invites the OSCE to work harder "to fight prejudice, intolerance and discrimination against Christians and against the members of the other religions" through "informal educational schemes" aimed at "fighting intolerance and discrimination as means to prevent violence". The "common ground" for an alliance "between ethnic cultures, religions and identities", according to the delegate of the Holy See, is "respect" and "appreciation of religion and culture". Nowadays instead "religions are too often manipulated or even misunderstood as part of the problem, when in fact they should be considered part of the solution of the problems existing between different cultures and civilisations".” “
