Born on 2 April 1922 in Brisighella, within the Faenza-Modigliana diocese, he became priest in 1945 and bishop in 1987. He was appointed cardinal by John Paul II in 1998. His Vatican service started in 1959 as secretary, with the office which was then called Office of the Master of Chamber. After the 1967 Reformation, decided by Paul VI, he became regent of the Apostolic Palace. He left the office of prefect of the Papal House eight years ago, in 1998.
