EUROPE: CONFRONTATION WITHIN THE EU ABOUT NUCLEAR TESTS IN NORTH KOREA. "A THREAT FOR THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY"

The nuclear tests conducted by North Korea, which are the focus of the attention of the international community, land in Brussels. The EU bodies endlessly follow the development of the situation: this is partly why the agenda of the parliamentary session due today and tomorrow has been widely changed: the first point is a "statement of the Commission about the nuclear tests in North Korea", which is going to open the meeting of the EU Parliament. As to nuclear tests, the president of Parliament, Josep Borrell, has however already expressed his "firm condemnation", claiming that in this way the Asian country "fails to respect the appeals for the non-proliferation of atomic weapons" and becomes "a threat for the international community". Borrell confides that the United Nations will take a clear position. The session of the EU meeting will then go on with a discussion, with the top executives of the Commission and Council, on the informal summit of the heads of state and government planned for 20th October at Lahti (Finland). "External energy policy, illegal immigration, competitiveness and innovation will be the main points on the agenda". The leaders of the 25 member states will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin at Lahti.
