The European workshop, "Fifty years after the Treaty of Rome, what values for Europe?", promoted by the Commission of the EU Bishops Conferences (Comece), opened this morning in Clermont Ferrand (France). It is one the steps towards the international meeting to be held in Rome from 23rd to 25th March 2007, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Treaty that laid the foundations of the European Community. At the end of this journey, Comece will send a "message" to the Christians of Europe and to the heads of State and Government. The workshop of Clermont Ferrand will be attended by fifty experts for a historical and political review and for suggesting a few prospects for a higher dynamism of the European project. A "Committee of Sages" has specially been established it gathered for the first time last September 11th in Brussels composed of 25 European experts in order to draw up a report on EU values. Another reference will be the document of Comece, "Catholics and Europe" (9 May 2005), which is available in different languages on www.comece.org. This morning, the reports given by Alfred Grosser (University of Paris) and Mihaly Kranitz (University of Budapest) were listened to by over 250 secondary-school students who will take the floor to say what they think about Europe.
