BENEDICT XVI AT ANGELUS: "THE TESTIMONY OF CHRISTIAN MARRIED COUPLES IS NEEDED" TODAY

Yesterday the Pope spoke of marriage, before he celebrated the Angelus prayer with the faithful and the pilgrims gathered in Saint Peter’s Square. "On this Sunday – said Benedict XVI – the Gospel presents us Jesus’ words on marriage", in particular the fact that once married a man and a woman "are no longer two, but one body", so "shall man not separate what God joined". The Holy Father explained that this is "the original plan of God, as also recalled by the Second Vatican Council in the constitution ‘Gaudium et spes’: ‘The inner communion of married life and love, founded by the Maker and governed by its own laws, is established by the marital tie… God Himself is the author of marriage’". "I am thinking – added Benedict XVI – of all Christian married couples: with them I thank the Lord for the gift of the Sacrament of marriage, and I exhort them to remain faithful to their calling in every season of their life, ‘in joy and in sorrow, in health and in sickness’, as they promised in the sacramental rite".
