Despite “the large number of progresses” made in the area of the “prevention, treatment and recovery” of Aids, “while the pandemic seems to be under control in some countries, many other countries seem to be virtually helpless in facing the spread” of the virus. The cry for alarm comes from mgr. Celestino Migliore, observer of the Holy See to the UN, who, as he spoke at the 61st session of the general assembly of the United Nations, made an invitation to “face” the “challenge” of Aids “with more specific measures, for instance by learning from the specific measures taken in the sphere of foreign debt with the poor countries which have most debts”. “The concentration of our financial, logistic and human resources is the Vatican delegate’s theory could enable the countries most affected by Aids to put an end to this plague and strengthen the hope that humankind will eradicate the pandemic that has spread all over the world”. In his speech, mgr. Migliore also dealt with the subject of humanitarian aids: “The United Nations he hopes should keep playing a key role in balancing the independence of the players of civil society with the need to guarantee effective aids to the more vulnerable ones”.
