Reviewing the best methods for defending children from abuse and cruelty. This is the goal of the conference promoted by the Council of Europe, United Nations and NGOs, due in Athens on September 29th and 30th. The subject of the meeting is "Mediation in favour of children" and stresses the importance of the control that mediators can exercise to make sure children are respected in their native countries. The conference will also be attended by a delegation of children. By listening to their problems and worries, the delegates will review not just the respect of their rights, but will also look for a way to strengthen the children’s involvement in the work of the bodies in charge. The floor will be taken by Vladimir Lukin, Russian mediator for human rights, George Kaminis, Greek mediator, Thomas Hammarberg, Commissioner for Human Rights at the CoE, and Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, assistant secretary general of the CoE.
