BENEDICT XVI, ISLAM MEETING: “WORKING TOGETHER TO AVOID INTOLERANCE AND VIOLENCE”

” ““I wish the relations inspired by trust that have been established years ago between Christians and Muslims may not only continue but also grow in a spirit of sincere and respectful dialogue, a dialogue based on an increasingly real mutual knowledge that joyfully recognises the common religious values and loyally acknowledges and respects differences”. This was stated by Benedict XVI during the meeting he had today in Castel Gandolfo with the ambassadors of some Muslim countries, Islam leaders in Italy and delegates from the Islamic Cultural Centre of Italy and the Office of the Muslim League. “Inter-religious and intercultural dialogue – insisted the Pope – is essential, to build together the world of peace and fraternity that is fervently longed for by all the men of good will. In this sphere, our contemporaries expect of us an eloquent testimony that can point out to everybody the value of the religious dimension of life”. According to Benedict XVI, “by holding fast to the lessons of their respective religious traditions, Christians ad Muslims must learn to work together to avoid any form of intolerance and oppose to any display of violence, and we, as religious leaders and political decision-makers, must guide and encourage them to act this way”.
