BENEDICT XVI IN GERMANY: MEETING IN FREISING WITH PRIESTS AND PERMANENT DEACONS, "THE FORCE OF GRAVITY" TO BE CONQUERED

” “In fact, in the text left to the priests and permanent deacons to read, the Pope emphasised that "Jesus did not ask His disciples to go and call more volunteers or organise promotional campaigns for new members, but to ‘pray’ God”. This does not mean the "vocational pastoral must be limited to praying", but that "only by staying in inner communion with the Master of the harvest" "can one bring more people to work for the Kingdom of God". In other words, "one is not moving, therefore, amidst figures and effectiveness, but gratuitousness and free giving". The "workers" of the harvest of God, then, "are those who know how to follow in Christ’s footsteps", but, "to do this, one must become estranged from oneself and get fully ‘in tune’ with His will". This is, warns Benedict XVI, "a hard feat, as it clashes with the ‘force of gravity’ that is innate in ourselves, that directs us towards our own self. Such force, we can conquer only if we set out on a paschal journey of death and resurrection". Through this paschal journey, "the disciple becomes a real witness of the Lord".” “
