INDIA: BISHOPS CONDEMN VANDALISM AGAINTS A CATHOLIC SCHOOL

” “”The Catholic school in India has always respected the different religious traditions and given an education that promotes a spirit of peace and harmony. No discrimination whatsoever has ever been made in any Catholic school, so there is no reason for thinking a meeting of prayer may cause discrimination”. With these words, the Catholic Bishops of India, in a statement issued today, condemn the vandalism committed against the premises of the Loreto Convent School of Lucknow on Sunday night. A vandalism which, highlight the bishops, "impairs the normal work of the school and arouses negative feelings in the people”. In the last few days, the headmaster of the Catholic school had asked a priest from Western Bengal to attend a spiritual meeting with the students, during which some children collapsed out of weariness but were promptly assisted. “An accident that – according to the bishops – has been blown out of all proportion” and caused activists from different movements "to profane" what is "a temple of knowledge for thousands of children”. “We repeat – concludes the statement – that the Catholic educational institutes are committed to promote harmony and social justice and ensure excellent standards of education and training for responsible and conscientious citizens”.” “
