EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT: GO-AHEAD TO ENTERING A PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT WITH ALBANIA (2)

” “Relations – specifies the resolution – "that will help establish political, economic and institutional stability in the country as well as in the whole of the region, and promote the transition of Albania to a pluralistic democracy that will respect the Constitutional state and will have an effective market economy". Then the Parliament insisted that it will give "full support to the European perspective of Albania and its future integration in the European family". While acknowledging that reforms have been started in Albania, the Parliament however highlighted that the country "should broaden such reforms and show more tangible results" and accomplish a good degree of implementation of the stabilisation and partnership agreement, "in order to move on to a further stage of its European integration". In the resolution, the MEPs also asked for further progress to be made in the areas of the fight against corruption and organised crime and in the fight against the trafficking of humans and drugs. They also asked for improvements to be made in the Family Code, in the treatment of convicts and in the protection of minorities. According to a survey by Eurobarometro published in late July, Albania is one of the least-favoured future EU countries for the European public opinion: in the 25-state EU, the mean rates of people in favour and people against are 41% and 44%, respectively.” “
