MIDDLE EAST: CEC/KEK, “DON’T LET’S JUST PRAY. NOW’S THE TIME TO ACT”. THREE PLANS (2)

“We talked with the Jewish, Muslim and Christian leaders in Palestine and Israel – explains De Clermont – who recalled the importance of inter-religious dialogue they started and the support they expect of the international community so that it can grow. This message states that everyone wants peace in Lebanon, Palestine and Israel, within safe boundaries and in mutual respect”. In addition, De Clermont speaks of “conditions being placed on UN Resolution 1701” because they think “it does not touch on the heart of the matter”. He adds: “The people we talked to powerfully asked to go back to negotiations, to build a sound peace for the whole region, thus enabling Israelis and Palestinians to live in States that have safe, internationally-recognised borders”. According to the president of Cec, three are the ways to be tried: “Not to let oneself being involved in shallow or intentionally-misleading analyses that would take us far from the heart of the matter, which is the conflict between Israel and Palestine; lobby our governments and especially the US Government and the European Union so that this crisis will open up to peace negotiations, with no exclusive rights, and especially support the US and European Churches that are working at this; ask our Churches to commit themselves in a more factual way for justice in the Middle East”.
