CCEE: CARD. ERDÖ, "IMPROVING PRACTICAL COLLABORATION WITH THE ORTHODOX"

"Either deciding or preparing the meeting of the Pope with Alexis II is not our task; while the essential theological dialogue is carried out and led by the competent ministry of the Holy See, commitment to the improvement of relationships, as well as the practical collaboration with the Orthodox world, are up to us", said Card. Péter Erdö, archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest and president of CCEE (Council of European Bishops’ Conferences), during a press conference taking place in Rome today, in the headquarters of Radio Vaticana, after the audience of the presidency of CCEE before Benedict XVI. The CCEE presidency, elected in Saint Petersburg in October 2006, has been in Rome since 24 April for a series of meetings with the people in charge of some ministries of the Holy See. "More and more often, – went on Card. Erdö – Orthodoxy confirms the need for direct conversations with the Catholic world, above all, in relation to subjects concerning the fundamental values in Europe; we must encourage this dialogue, maybe through periodical meetings". "However, if one day Benedict XVI – he concluded – opened or presided over one of our plenary sessions, it would be a great joy, as he is going to do during his imminent journey to Brazil, on the occasion of CELAM".
