BENEDICT XVI: EXCHANGE OF LETTERS WITH ANGELA MERKEL, "ERADICATING POVERTY IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT TASKS OF OUR TIME"(2)

For the poor countries, the Pope asks for "favourable trade conditions" that will include "wide and unconditional access to the markets”; “the quick, full and unconditional writing off the foreign debt” and “measures to be taken, so that these country will not end up in unsustainable debt again”. Then, Benedict XVI invites the industrialised countries to "be aware of the commitments they have taken in terms of aids to development and to fulfil them to the full”. He also asks for "major investments in the field of the research and development of drugs for the treatment of Aids, tuberculosis, malaria and other tropical diseases”. In particular, he invites to "tackle the urgent scientific task of developing at last a malaria vaccine”. Other requests made by the Holy Father to the international community include: "a significant reduction in legal and illegal trade of weapons, the illegal trade of precious raw materials and the flight of capitals from the poor countries" and commitment to eradicate "money laundering” and the “corruption of officers in the poor countries”.
