EUROPE: TRANSATLANTIC RELATIONSHIPS AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE WORLD, IN THE PLENARY SESSION OF THE EU PARLIAMENT

The transatlantic relationships, those with India, and the situation of human rights in the world, are some of the issues in the agenda of the plenary assembly of the European parliament, summoned in Strasbourg from Monday 23 to Thursday 26 April. In view of the summit which is taking place in Washington next 30 April, the Parliament will debate on the relationships between the European Union and the United States. The German chancellor, Angela Merkel (current president of the EU) and Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner will lead the representatives during the meeting with President George Bush. They "consider intensification of transatlantic relationships a priority – it is pointed out in a note by the press office, – both in the economic and the political fields". On 25 April, the European parliament will debate in the presence of the Council and the Commission, and will adopt a resolution. "Apart from the usual issues, such as economic cooperation and trade talks, the more political issues linked with the fight against terrorism (Guantanamo), and the environmental and energy challenges, the MEPs might also tackle the new and disputed programme of European missiles, promoted by the United States in Poland and Czech Republic". On the same day, Abdul Kalam, president of India, will be present in Strasbourg, and will speak to the MEPs. (To be continued)
