The celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the EEC Treaties are going on across the EU. After the official celebrations, that took place in Berlin, Rome and Brussels on March 25th, the latest initiative comes from the German chair of the EU Council: the website www.eu50.eu offers a "Sweet Europe", i.e. "unity in diversity through 55 recipes of traditional cakes" of the 27 member states. "Traditional recipes are given in all the official languages of the EU explains the chair in a note: the Dobos cake from Hungary, the jelly cake from Lithuania, the apple pie from Romania, the Frankfurt doughnut from Germany. Italy presents the traditional ring-shaped cake, the ciambellone, Cyprus presents the Daktila and Sweden presents the princess cake… "The 50th anniversary of the Treaties says the website www.europa.eu/50, which gives updates on the dates of the next events , gives Europeans the opportunity to show their creativity and inventiveness. The celebrations held all over the EU included art contests, concerts, skating races. And this is just the beginning". Recurring events include the symbolic planting of trees: it took place in Valletta (Malta), Bratislava (Slovakia) and in several cities across Estonia and Latvia. Other events are due until May 9th, the feast of Europe.
