BENEDICT XVI’S 80TH BIRTHDAY: ALONG WITH RESPONSIBILITIES "THE LORD ALSO BROUGHT MORE HELP INTO MY LIFE"

"The Lord brought His wounds along through eternity. He is a hurt God; He let Himself be wounded by His love for us", actually "He always lets Himself be wound for us. What a certainty of His mercy and what a consolation this is to us!", said the Pope yesterday morning during Mass for his 80th birthday. At the same time, these wounds "mean we have a duty to let ourselves be wounded for Him". "God’s mercies – went on Benedict XVI – are with us day after day. We only have to have a watchful heart to be able to sense them. We are too prone to feeling only the daily labours that have been imposed on us, as Adam’s children. But, if we open up our hearts, then even, if engrossed in them, we can realise all the time how good God is to us; how He thinks of us just in the small things, thus helping us achieve the bigger ones". With the heavier weight of responsibility, highlighted the Pope, "the Lord also brought more help into my life. I see all the time, with grateful joy, how big is the crowd of people who support me with their prayers; who with their faith and with their love help me accomplish my task; who are indulgent with my weakness, recognising the benevolent light of Jesus Christ even in Peter’s shadow".
