SIR EUROPA: SLOVENIA, MGR. BROLLO (UDINE) HAILS THE PULLING DOWN OF THE WALL

"It is the re-conquest of fraternity amidst people and peoples". With these words, the archbishop of Udine, mgr. Pietro Brollo, hails the pulling down of the border with Slovenia, due today at midnight. In the church of Udine, the climate is very festive. The archdiocese boasts the longest portion of frontier with the neighbouring Republic, in addition to that with Austria. "The people of Friuli must be aware of the central role they regain – highlights mgr. Brollo –. These regions stand out for their centrality not just geographical but above all historical and cultural for the evangelisation and the missions of the Church of Aquileia". For a long time the church of Udine has walked in this wake, helped all along the frontier as well as through the common attendance of the sanctuaries of Lussari and Castelmonte, beloved by the peoples of Friuli, Slovenia and Carinthia. It is the "Pilgrimage of the three peoples", organised in conjunction with the archdiocese of Ljubljana and the diocese of Klagenfurt, "it really feels like a prophetic initiative. It has been held every year since 1981, when Slovenia was beyond the ‘iron curtain’ and Austria could not join the European Union".
