MORATORIUM ON DEATH PENALTY: Daul (Ppe), THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY FOR "FREEDOM AND HUMAN DIGNITY"

"With this resolution" of the United Nations, "the international community shows its attachment to fundamental freedoms and human dignity": Joseph Daul, president of the People’s Party group at the EU Parliament, reacts to the vote of the New York Glass Palace. "Our group – he explains to SIR –, whose first priority is to defend and promote values, cannot but subscribe to the UN appeal to bind all states to a moratorium on executions, with a view to abolishing death penalty". Daul regards such resolution as an important step in a debate "without taboos" on the problem of death penalty and wishes all the states that still use gallows "will feel questioned" by such position of the international community. The People’s Party leader recalls that the European Union is well ahead in this area, "since one of the prerequisites for accession is that the national law does not provide for death penalty". "I hope – concludes the French politician – this example will be followed, because it testifies to the sacred value of the human being".
