SIR EUROPA: ACCORDING TO EUROBAROMETER, "CITIZENS’ CONFIDENCE IN THE EU IS GROWING"

48% of European citizens trust the EU; 34% trust their national governments. The autumn survey by Eurobarometer, revealed in Brussels today, shows that "the overall attitude of the citizens towards the EU and its institutions remains extremely positive". The citizens of the 27 member states are instead "increasingly worried about the economic situation of their countries, in particular the price levels". Margot Wallstrom, deputy president of the EU Commission, comments: "It is extremely encouraging to see that the citizens’ satisfaction for the fact their country is a EU member state has reached an all-time peak, and twice as many citizens think their country is benefiting from belonging to the Union compared with those see no advantage in it". Two are the main indicators of the overall attitudes towards the Union in this surveys that was conducted between September and November on 30 thousand people: people satisfied about being a EU member state account for 58% of the sample (+1% more than last spring), while 50% of the interviewees say being a EU member state is beneficial (-1%).
