SIR EUROPE: FRANCE, TALKS IN PARIS ABOUT THE FUTURE OF DIALOGUE BETWEEN HEBREWS AND CATHOLICS

” “This evening, in Paris, the council representing Hebrew institutions in France (CRIF), in collaboration with the European Hebrew Congress and the National Service of French Bishops for relations with Hebraism promotes talks dedicated to the future of relations between Hebrews and Catholics. The talks originate from the 10th anniversary of the "Declaration of Drancy", signed by the bishops of France on September 30th, 1997. In this Declaration, the Catholic Church looks back on its history in relation with the Hebrew population, above all, during the German persecution. "For the Church – it is written in the text, – it’s time to analyze its history under a critical point of view, to acknowledge the sins committed by its children with no hesitation, and to ask God and men for forgiveness". This evening, talks are opening with homage to Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger, a man with Hebrew origins. He did much to encourage dialogue between Hebrews and Catholics. Richard Prasquier, president of CRIF; Joseph Sitruk, grand rabbi of France; Cardinal André Vingt-Trois, president of the bishops of France; Msgr. Norbert Hofmann, secretary of the Papal Council for the Unity of the Christians; Grand Rabbi René-Samule Sirat; and the grand rabbi of Moscow, Pinchas Goldsmidt, are going to be present. The talks will end with the reading of an appeal to dialogue. ” “
