SIR EUROPA: ECUMENISM, CARD. KASPER’S TRIP TO UKRAINE

The trip of card. Walter Kasper, president of the Papal Council for the promotion of the unity of Christians, in Kiev, Ukraine, ended yesterday morning. Welcomed on Thursday 6th December by card. Lubomyr Husar, Archbishop Major of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, the following day the cardinal, along with the apostolic nuncio mgr. Ivan Jurcoviè, went to Lavra, Kiev, the city of His Beatitude Vladimir, metropolitan bishop of Kiev and all Ukraine, the leader of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Patriarchate of Moscow. The cardinal visited the catacombs of the Martyrs of the Russian Land and prayed on the relics of the head of Saint Clemens, the fourth Pope of Rome, sent by the emperor with another 2000 Christians to the gateway to the Black sea, in Chersonez, where he was martyred. At 12 am, the cardinal met the Metropolitan Bishop Vladimir, the leader of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Patriarchate of Moscow, which includes 11,000 parishes in Ukraine. "This Holy Place – said the cardinal to the metropolitan bishop – reminds us particularly of the time at which we used to live in the only, undivided church and invites us, that may our sister churches get closer".
