MIGRATION: TOMASI (OBSERVER OF THE HOLY SEE TO THE UN), "A MORE COMPLETE APPROACH IS NEEDED"

When faced with estimates that speak of 200 million people living and working in countries that are not their native ones, a complete and collaborative approach to the problem of migration is needed, involving States, intergovernmental institutions, society, communities of faith and NGOs, as well as delegates of migrants’ associations. This is in short what has been stated by mgr. Silvano Tomasi, permanent observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, at the session of the Council of IMO (International Migration Organisation) that took place in Geneva on 29th November. In his address, that has been published today by the Newsroom of the Holy See, mgr. Tomasi drew attention to two dimensions that are "not adequately tackled" about migration: "the rise in the number of victims of migration, and the priority of the person over economy". According to the Observer of the Holy See, "the whole protection and human rights system is confined to a marginal role, instead of being at the service of the dignity of the human being. New and creative forms of protection, prevention and humanitarian assistance are needed". (continued)
