MIGRATION: TOMASI (OBSERVER OF THE HOLY SEE TO THE UN), "A MORE COMPLETE APPROACH IS NEEDED" (2)

"A complete approach to the problem, that keeps into account such aspects as the decision to emigrate, how many immigrants should be let in, the ways in which they can participate in the life of the host society, the role of migrants in the economic processes; their right to enjoy protection and rights – went on mgr. Tomasi – seems to be the best way to go". However, the Vatican delegate commented that "the political trend seems clear and prone to responding to the emotional demands of the public opinion for control and social inclusion". In the long term, "a fair, effective solution can only come from a far-ranging approach that involves all the political parties". "Growing consensus" can be found about this type of approach "and on the need to pay more attention to migrants as persons than to their economic role". Hence the request made by the Holy See to "appeal to the political will to ratify and implement the tools that have already been developed concerning human rights". In this sphere, concluded mgr. Tomasi, "an important role is played by education. Migrants, aware of their own rights, will be more at ease offering their services and talents to the host community, in the awareness they will be freer in building a common future".
