SIR EUROPA: SCOTLAND, A LIVE TURKEY AT CHRISTMAS TO THE POOR COUNTRIES

” “” “” ” ” “Not a roasted turkey on the table set for Christmas, but a live one in the farmyard of some village in one of the many developing countries. This is the unusual charitable initiative proposed for Advent 2007 by Sciaf, the international aid and development agency of the Scottish Catholic Church. "In Scotland – explained Sciaf –, money is wasted on useless, meaningless presents. Why then not give something useful and necessary to those who are less lucky than we are?" Hence the "Real gifts" campaign, inviting people, among other things, to buy turkeys to be sent to the poor families of 23 developing countries who will raise them, thus ensuring income as well as food for themselves. Other gifts include mango trees, chickens, pigs, or even funds for nursing courses. People who choose one of these gifts will also receive a Christmas card that they can give to relatives or friends to feed this charity chain. For more information, visit www.sciaf.org.uk.” “” “
