"In the run-up to the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, the European dynamics is at a standstill", comment the signatories of the Manifesto of the IXE Group, called: "Let’s find again the sense of the building of Europe", presented in Brussels this morning. According to the promoters, "today, the European project has less support and less adhesion from the citizens", as shown by "the poor show-up at the latest European elections" and the "rejection of the Constitutional Treaty by two founding countries France and Holland". Hence the urgency of "a new reflection on the sense of the European project (the reconciliation of peoples to build a space of peace, right, prosperity and solidarity)". The text highlights that in Europe still "too many citizens are left out of the benefits of the economic growth", so "a high level of employment and social protection must be guaranteed", to protect "the dignity of the human being". Then, vis-à-vis globalisation, continuing conflicts in the planet, poverty, migration, Europe has also the "worldwide duty" of "being a factor of peace, a promoter of solidarity, of common migration policies" and above all it is called to put in place "a worldwide governance at the service of lasting development".
