WATER: WORLD MEETING IN BRUSSELS AGAINST THE PRIVATISATION OF WATER SERVICES

The 1st world meeting of citizens and elected members for water (Amece) will begin at the EU Parliament in Brussels from 18th to 20th March. For the first time, an institutional body, the EU Parliament, will host a meeting with citizens from all over the world. The event is promoted by an International committee of over forty movements and associations with the organisational support of a Belgian Committee of the World Water Contract, promoted by Cipsi – coordination of 37 international charity associations -, Cevi, Cospe, Cric and Legambiente. The purpose of this first meeting, explain the promoters, is to "create a connection between citizens and institutions, in order to undertake factual commitments to guarantee anyone will have access to water". About 800 people are expected to come: they will include MEPs, elected members and executives of municipalities and local authorities, representatives of public water providers, trade unions and citizens. The meeting should result in the compilation of an "action plan and factual commitments for the next three years’ period (2007-2010)". Registration is possible until 7th March.
