COUNCIL OF EUROPE: TWO WORKSHOPS ON STATE-RELIGION RELATIONS AND IMPACT OF ABORTION

Relations between State and religions and the impact of abortion on women: these are two of the items on the agenda of two workshops promoted by the Council of Europe, held in Strasbourg and Paris, respectively. In the Alsatian city, where the CoE is based, they will discuss the regulations that govern relations between political authority and religious communities, "religious influence on the life of the nation", national laws against blasphemy; the participants, "including philosophers, historians and jurists from different religious backgrounds" "will also discuss the theory of creationism". Many experts are expected, such as: Thomas Hammarberg, commissioner for human rights at the CoE; Frank Cranmer, University College of London; Talip Kucukcan, Political, Economic and Social Research Foundation of Ankara; Antonio Maria Baggio, Gregorian University of Rome. In Paris instead the debate is focussed on abortion and its impact, but the selection of the items on the agenda seems a bit biased: "Within the framework of the compilation of a report on this subject by Gisela Wurm – says a press release -, the participants will review the situation of pregnant women who experience inner conflict, access to legal and risk-free abortion, sex education and access to contraceptives".
